Alright, let's talk about floor cleaning machine pads. My old ones were just completely done for. Seriously, flat as pancakes and barely scrubbing anymore. The machine was working harder than the pads, if you know what I mean. Just pushing dirty water around mostly. I knew I had to get some new ones.

Figuring Out What to Get

So, I started looking into it. Went online first, then checked out the local janitorial supply place. Man, there are a lot of pads! Different colors, different textures. It was a bit confusing at first. I saw black ones, green ones, blue, red, white... seemed like a whole rainbow.

I asked the guy at the supply store, trying to keep it simple. Basically, he explained the darker the color, the rougher the pad. Like:

  • Black/Brown: Really heavy-duty stripping, taking off old finish. Sounded too aggressive for my regular cleaning.
  • Green/Blue: More for scrubbing, getting rid of dirt and scuffs. This seemed like what I needed for the main job.
  • Red: Kinda light scrubbing or spray buffing.
  • White/Tan: Mostly for polishing, making things shiny.

Made sense. I wasn't stripping the floor, just wanted a good clean and maybe a bit of shine afterwards. So, I decided to grab a couple of blue ones for scrubbing and a white one for polishing, just to see how it worked.

Putting Them to the Test

Got back home, pulled out the floor machine. Taking the old pad off was easy, it practically fell off. Snapping the new blue pad on was simple too, most machines have that clutch plate thing that grabs it.

I filled the machine with my usual cleaning solution and got started on the kitchen floor, which always gets the grimiest. Straight away, I could feel the difference. The machine felt more connected to the floor, and you could hear the pad actually scrubbing. It wasn't just gliding over the dirt; it was digging in a bit.

I did a few passes, and honestly, the amount of dirt lifting up into the water was pretty impressive compared to the old pads. It definitely took less effort to get the sticky spots and shoe marks off. Had to move a bit slower than usual maybe, because the pad was actually doing its job, creating a bit more drag, but that was fine.

After scrubbing the whole area and sucking up the dirty water, I let the floor dry for a bit. Then, just for kicks, I swapped out the blue pad for the white polishing pad. Ran the machine over the dry floor. Didn't use any spray or anything, just the pad. It definitely brought up a nice, subtle shine. Not like a mirror or anything, but it looked cleaner, smoother. It was quiet too, that white pad.

Cleaning Up and Final Thoughts

Cleaning the pads afterwards wasn't too bad. I just rinsed the blue scrubbing pad under the utility sink faucet. Took a little bit of spraying to get all the gunk out, but it came clean. The white pad barely looked dirty, just needed a quick rinse.

So yeah, getting the right pads made a huge difference. The blue one did the heavy lifting for cleaning, and the white one added that little finishing touch. Definitely worth figuring out which pad does what instead of just grabbing whatever. The floors look way better now, and it feels like the machine is working properly again. Lesson learned: don't wait until the pads are totally useless before replacing them!
