Which flex washing machine should you buy? Here are top recommendations for families.

Alright, let me tell you about this little project I tackled the other day – what I’m calling my "flex washing" adventure. It’s about cleaning out that flexible dryer vent hose. You know the one, usually a silver slinky-looking thing behind the dryer.

Getting Started

So, the dryer was taking forever to dry clothes. Like, multiple cycles. I figured the vent was probably clogged up again. It's one of those jobs you put off, right? But I decided, okay, today's the day. First thing, I unplugged the dryer. Safety first, always. Then I had to wrestle the dryer away from the wall. Not exactly light work, let me tell you.

Once I had some room, I needed a few things:

  • A screwdriver or nut driver for the hose clamp.
  • A vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment.
  • One of those dryer vent brush kits – the kind with flexible rods you screw together.
  • Gloves and maybe a dust mask, 'cause it gets messy.

The Dirty Work

I loosened the clamp holding the flexible hose to the back of the dryer. Pulled it off gently. Then I did the same where it connected to the wall vent pipe. Man, you wouldn't believe the lint packed in there! It was just caked on the inside of that flexible tube.

This is where the "flex washing" really started. I took the flexible hose outside first, because I knew it would make a mess. I stretched it out as much as I could. Then, I started feeding the brush kit into it. You gotta be careful with these flexible hoses; they can tear if you're too rough. I just worked the brush back and forth, section by section. Lint started flying out everywhere. It was pretty gross, actually.

After brushing, I took the vacuum cleaner. I stuck the hose attachment into one end of the flexible vent tube and sucked out as much loose stuff as I could. Then I did the same from the other end. I gave the tube a good shake too, trying to dislodge anything stubborn. It took a bit of patience, twisting the flexible tube around to make sure I got most of it.

I also made sure to clean the vent opening on the dryer itself and the pipe going into the wall. No point cleaning the flexible part if the ends are still blocked, right?

Finishing Touches

Once the flexible hose looked reasonably clean inside – way better than before, anyway – I brought it back inside. Reattaching it was the next step. Slid it back onto the dryer outlet, tightened the clamp. Did the same for the wall connection. You want those connections to be snug so lint doesn't leak out.

Then came the fun part: pushing the dryer back into place. Made sure the flexible hose wasn't kinked or crushed behind it. That’s important – it needs a clear path. Plugged the dryer back in.

Ran a test cycle, just air fluff for a few minutes. Went outside to check the vent flap – yep, blowing strong! Felt good. Clothes are drying way faster now. It’s amazing how much gunk builds up in those flexible lines. Doing that "flex washing" wasn't fun, but definitely worth it. Peace of mind, you know? Plus, the dryer actually works properly again.
