Okay, so I finally got around to tackling the grime on my patio this weekend using one of those powerwash cleaner machines. Let me walk you through how it went.
Getting Started
First things first, I had to lug the machine out from the back of the garage. It wasn't super heavy, but awkward. Then came connecting everything. I hooked up my garden hose to the inlet, made sure it was tight so it wouldn't leak. Then, attached the high-pressure hose – the stiff black one – from the machine to the spray gun handle. That one screws on too. Mine's gas-powered, so I had to check the oil level and top it off with some fresh gas. Always feels like I'm prepping for some major operation.
Before actually starting, I cleared off the patio furniture, swept away the loose leaves and junk. Didn't want to just blast debris everywhere. Oh, and I put on some old boots – definitely didn't want to accidentally blast my toes.
Firing It Up and Cleaning
Pulling the starter cord took a couple of tries, but it roared to life. Man, these things are loud! Note to self: maybe wear ear protection next time. I decided to test it on a corner patch first, just to get a feel for the power. Good idea, because it really kicks!
I started cleaning by holding the wand with both hands, keeping the nozzle maybe a foot or so away from the concrete. I tried to use a sweeping motion, going back and forth, slightly overlapping each pass. It was amazing watching the dirt just disappear, leaving a clean streak behind. It's weirdly satisfying.
- I found keeping a consistent distance was important. Too close, and it felt like it might etch the surface; too far, and it didn't clean as well.
- Moving slowly and steadily seemed to work best. Rushing it left faint lines.
- Had to keep an eye on the hoses so they didn't get tangled up or caught on anything. That was probably the most annoying part, dragging the hoses around.
Some spots were tougher, especially where some old moss had grown. I had to go over those areas a few times, maybe holding the nozzle a tiny bit closer for a second or two. I just used the general-purpose nozzle it came with, didn't feel the need to switch it out.
Wrapping Up
It took me a good hour or so to do the whole patio. My arms were definitely feeling it afterwards from holding the vibrating wand. There was also water and sludgy dirt everywhere nearby, so some rinsing of the surrounding area was needed.
But honestly, the difference is huge. The patio looks so much brighter and cleaner. It's like night and day. Despite the noise and wrestling with the hoses, seeing that instant clean was pretty cool. Definitely worth the effort, I'd say. Now I'm looking around wondering what else I can blast clean!
