Which moss killer spray is best? (Our top 3 picks to clear your yard and patio fast)

Alright, so let me tell you about this moss killer spray I ended up using. My patio, man, it was looking like something out of a nature documentary, and not in a good way. Green, slimy, slippery – the whole nine yards. It was getting pretty bad, especially in the shady spots behind the shed.

First off, I tried the old-fashioned ways. Got out there with a stiff brush and a bucket of soapy water. Scrubbed until my arms felt like they were gonna fall off. Yeah, it looked a bit better for, like, a week? Then the moss just laughed and came back, probably brought its mates too. Then I thought, okay, power washer! That’ll show it. Blasted the heck out of the paving slabs. Water and grime everywhere. Cleaned it up, sure, but some of the sand between the slabs went with it, and guess what? Moss loved those new empty spots even more. Just felt like I was making more work for myself down the line.

So, I was wandering through the garden center, grumbling to myself, and saw this moss killer spray. Figured, what the heck, gotta try something different. I’m not usually one for too many chemicals, but I was at my wit's end. Grabbed a bottle, one of those ready-to-use ones with its own sprayer nozzle, 'cause I’m all about keeping it simple.

Got home, waited for a dry spell. The instructions said something about no rain for a few hours, which, you know, is always a gamble. But I found a decent afternoon. Put on some old clothes, 'cause I didn’t fancy getting this stuff on my good jeans. Gave the bottle a good shake, and just went for it. Sprayed all the mossy bits. The patio, some of the lower brickwork on the wall, even a few spots on the path. It was pretty straightforward, just point and shoot. The smell wasn’t too bad, a bit chemical-ly, but not overpowering. I made sure the cat was inside, obviously.

Then it was just a waiting game. The bottle said you’d see results in a few days. I’m not gonna lie, I was out there checking it probably more than I should have. Day one, not much. Day two, I thought I could see some of the really thick patches starting to look a bit… sad? By day three or four, boom. That green stuff was turning brown and black. Looked awful for a bit, like a moss graveyard, but it was definitely dying.

After about a week, most of it was properly dead. I then took a stiff yard brush and just swept it all away. It came off so much easier than when it was alive and kicking. Still a bit of effort, but nothing like the scrubbing I was doing before. The patio looked a whole lot better. Way cleaner.

Now, it wasn’t all perfect, I gotta say.

  • I did notice on a couple of my older, more porous paving slabs, there was a very slight, kinda bleached look afterwards. Barely noticeable, mind you, and maybe it’s just my old slabs, but something to keep in mind if your stuff is super fancy.
  • And you really do need to be careful about plants you don’t want to harm. I had a few pots near the edge of the patio, and I made sure to move them well out of the way. Common sense, really.

So, what’s the verdict? For me, yeah, it was worth it. Saved me a ton of backache and the results lasted a good while longer than just scrubbing. It’s not a magic wand, you still gotta do a bit of cleanup, and be a bit careful where you spray it. But if you’re fighting a losing battle with moss like I was, it’s definitely an option I’d use again. Just, you know, read the label properly and don’t go too crazy with it.
