Which type of gas pressure washer should you buy? (Match the machines power to your typical cleaning tasks effectively)

Alright, so I finally bit the bullet and got myself one of those gas pressure washers. My driveway and the back patio, man, they were looking absolutely grim. Years of dirt, some green slimy stuff starting to creep in on the shady side. I just couldn't take looking at it anymore.

Getting this thing set up was the first adventure. Pulled it out of the box, felt pretty solid, heavier than I thought. Had to find the right spot for the oil, then mix the gas – or rather, just put straight gas in, this model was simple like that, thankfully. Checked all the connections, hooked up the water hose. That part was easy enough, just like a regular garden hose.

Then came the moment of truth: starting it. Let me tell you, that pull cord. First few pulls, nothing. Checked the choke, checked the fuel line. Pulled again. And again. Started to think I'd just bought myself a very expensive, very heavy garden ornament. My arm was already getting tired. I was about to give up and call it a day, maybe even return the darn thing.

But then, on what felt like the hundredth pull, it sputtered. Coughed a bit. And then, ROAR! It came to life. Loud! Way louder than I expected, but hey, it was running. Grabbed the wand, squeezed the trigger, and WHOOSH! That jet of water shot out with some serious force. I nearly stumbled back a bit, wasn't quite ready for that kick.

Tackling the Grime

I started with a small, inconspicuous patch on the driveway. The difference was immediate. Like, night and day. The built-up dirt just peeled away. It was so satisfying to watch. I got into a rhythm, slowly sweeping the nozzle back and forth. It was almost therapeutic, watching the clean concrete emerge from under all that muck.

Here's what I managed to clean over the weekend:

  • The entire concrete driveway. That took a while.
  • Our brick paver patio in the back. All the moss between the bricks? Gone.
  • The lower part of the vinyl siding that was getting a bit green. Had to be careful there, used a wider nozzle.
  • Even blasted the old plastic garden furniture, looks almost new!

Some things I learned pretty quick. You definitely need to wear old clothes. And shoes you don't care about. Because you WILL get wet. And muddy. Splatter goes everywhere. Also, those different nozzle tips? They really matter. The super-focused one is powerful enough to etch wood if you're not careful – found that out the hard way on an old fence post I was testing on, thankfully not the actual fence. The wider spray ones are better for larger areas and more delicate surfaces.

The machine drank gas pretty steadily, so I had to stop and refill it a couple of times. And yeah, it’s noisy. My neighbors probably weren't thrilled, but the results, man. The results speak for themselves. The driveway looks like new concrete was just poured. The patio is bright and welcoming again.

It was a long, tiring couple of days, and my back was definitely feeling it afterwards. But looking at how clean everything is? Totally worth the effort. I actually feel proud of it. Way better than trying to scrub all that by hand, that's for sure. Now I'm eyeing the wooden deck... that's next on the list!
