Alright folks, let's talk about my little adventure today trying to clean up some dirty aluminium pieces I found in the garage. Honestly, they looked awful, covered in this grimy layer and some weird white splotches – probably old polish or something. Just had to try fixing them up.

Getting Started & Gathering Stuff

First thing, I dug through my cleaning cupboard. Grabbed what I thought I needed:

  • A plastic basin (big enough for the pieces)
  • Some dish soap (the regular green stuff)
  • Plain white vinegar (about half a bottle left)
  • Very hot water (straight from the kettle)
  • An old toothbrush (with stiff bristles)
  • A bunch of soft cloths (mostly old t-shirts)
  • Safety glasses (almost forgot, splashes hurt!)

The Messy Part

Threw the aluminium pieces into the basin. Poured in the hot water – whoosh, steam everywhere. Then squirted in a good amount of dish soap, followed by the vinegar. Heard it fizzing immediately, kinda satisfying! Swirled it around with my hand, water turned cloudy real fast.

Let it sit there stewing for maybe ten minutes? Went outside, got distracted by some weeds. Came back and picked up the toothbrush. Started scrubbing at the gunk on one piece. The white splotches took some serious elbow grease, back-and-forth, back-and-forth. The toothbrush was bending hard! Had to rinse that piece under the tap to see progress. Water ran off all dirty, yuck.

Moved to the next piece. Hit a patch of what looked like rust maybe? Wasn't budging with the toothbrush. Got frustrated. Remembered seeing steel wool pads somewhere. Dug one out, BIG mistake. Tried lightly rubbing it. Scratched the heck out of the aluminium! Now I had dull streaks where it was shiny before. Felt dumb.

Put the steel wool away fast. Went back to just the toothbrush and the hot soapy vinegar mix for the rest. My fingers were getting all pruny, kid started calling me from the other room. Took longer than I thought!

Rinse & Reality Check

Finally pulled all the pieces out of the murky soup. Rinsed each one thoroughly under cold running water. Shook them off. Grabbed a clean, soft cloth and started drying.

Okay, results? Mixed bag, like usual. Most of the general grime was gone, which was great. The white splotches lightened up a lot but didn't vanish completely. The scratches from the steel wool? Oh yeah, totally visible. Lesson learned the hard way – stick to gentle stuff.

The parts I could reach easily with the toothbrush looked way better, brighter. But down in some deep grooves? Little bits of soap scum or something still hiding. Tried poking with a toothpick, didn't help much. Good enough for the garage wall hooks, I guess.

Left them out on a towel to air dry completely. That vinegar smell stuck around my sink area for a while. Next time I find dirty aluminium, maybe I'll skip the impromptu steel wool experiment!
