Save money using hvac coil cleaner machine keep coils working perfect!

Okay so summer rolled around again and my AC started acting weird. It was blowing warm air sometimes, took forever to cool the house, and the energy bill? Forget about it. Way too high. Figured maybe the filter was dirty again, even though I change it pretty regular.

Turned off the unit outside and popped the cover off. Man, the coils! They looked like a furry blanket had been wrapped around them. Thick with dirt, dust, little leaves stuck in there... maybe even some moldy looking spots? No wonder it couldn't breathe. Gross and definitely the problem.

Checked online quick about getting it professionally cleaned. Ouch. Quotes were crazy high for basically hosing it down. One guy wanted like $300 bucks minimum! Thought nah, there's got to be a cheaper way, I'm handy enough.

Started digging. Found folks talking about these HVAC coil cleaner machines. Basically little portable power washers made just for this. Sounded promising, and way cheaper in the long run. Hit the hardware store website and looked for one. Here’s what I figured I needed:

  • Something not too huge or heavy
  • Decent pressure but not like a car wash
  • That special coil cleaner liquid was safe for AC fins
  • Alligator clip power thing seemed handy
  • Price tag under $100 was key

Found one that fit the bill for like $80 bucks. Ordered it, along with a jug of that blue coil cleaner juice they recommended. Few days later, delivery arrived.

Alright, game day. Gathered the troops:

  • The new machine
  • Coil cleaner
  • Garden hose
  • Screwdriver (to take the guard off)
  • Old t-shirts (for wiping, probably mess)
  • Safety glasses (important!)

Shut off the power to the whole outdoor unit. Safety first, always. Popped the top grill off the AC condenser unit real easy. Revealed the battlefield. The coils were worse than I remembered, caked in grime.

Mixed the coil cleaner with water in the machine’s little tank – followed the bottle directions. Hooked the machine up to the garden hose, then plugged it into an extension cord (with GFCI outlet, don't skip that!). The machine has this little wand with a spray nozzle.

Put my safety glasses on. Flipped the switch on the machine. Bit of a whirring noise. Here goes nothing. Held the wand about 6 inches back from the coils and started spraying. Hit the upwind side first (important!) spraying top to bottom. Started from the inside going out. Used a gentle side-to-side motion, not just blasting one spot.

Oh yeah, the dirt started melting off! That blue juice was working, turning brown as it loosened everything. Sprayed it good, covering all the coils. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes like the bottle said, kind of foaming up.

Then, I switched the machine setting to just rinse. Hooked the garden hose directly to the machine. Then thoroughly rinsed it all off, again spraying top to bottom with clean water, same direction as the coil fins. Gotta get all that cleaner and gunk off. Took my time here.

Big lesson: Keep the hose water pressure reasonable and spray perpendicular. You don't want to bend those delicate aluminum fins! Bent fins mess up airflow. If you see any bent later, you can gently straighten them with a fin comb, but be careful.

After a solid rinse, I used an old t-shirt to gently wipe down the outside of the cabinet and get any drips. Then just left the unit open to air dry completely in the sun. Took maybe half an hour.

Put the top grill back on super easy. Turned the power back on. Went inside and cranked the thermostat way down just to test it.

Went back outside and listened. The compressor sounded normal. Then BAM, felt the air shooting out the top – it was so much stronger and hotter than before. Sign the unit was working harder and pushing way more heat out now. Inside, cold air blasted out fast. Success!

Result? AC runs better than it has in years, cools faster, and the energy bill next month dropped noticeably. Did it all myself for under $100 bucks including the cleaner, and the machine is sitting in the garage ready for next time. Annual cleaning? Got it covered now. That crap works!
