So my washing machine started acting up last week - sounded like a dying cat during spin cycle. Peeked underneath and saw water pooling. Ugh. Figured it must be the pump since it wasn't draining right. Watched three YouTube tutorials before feeling brave enough to try fixing it myself.
Getting Ready
First things first: unplugged the machine and turned off water valves behind it. Drained leftover water into a bucket using the emergency hose thingy. Got my tools ready:
- New pump I ordered online ($40)
- Screwdriver set
- Pliers
- Flashlight (essential!)
- Old towels (lots of them)
The Messy Part
Tipped the washer on its back carefully. Removed the bottom panel - surprise! Found a lost sock and three hairpins stuck in the old pump. Gross. Unhooked the drain hose and caught some nasty water in my bucket. Used pliers to disconnect the wiring harness - marked which wire went where with tape because colors didn't match YouTube videos.
Almost stripped one bolt trying to remove the pump bracket. Pro tip: if it won't budge, wiggle while turning slowly. Got all four bolts out after fifteen minutes of swearing. Pulled the old pump out - smelled like wet dog.
Installing the New Pump
Put the new pump in reverse order:
- Bolted the bracket back (hand-tight first!)
- Reconnected wires exactly how the old one was
- Clamped the drain hose super tight
Wiped everything dry before closing up. Plugged it in gingerly like defusing a bomb.
The Moment of Truth
Ran an empty cycle crossing my fingers. Heard the new pump humming instead of screeching! Checked underneath - bone dry. Did a victory dance when it drained perfectly.
Total time: About 2 hours (including cleanup)
Cost saved: At least $150 compared to repair guy
New skill unlocked: Washer surgery!
